Our Penalty Fare scheme covers our whole network (except Scotland). Where ticketing facilities are available, our customers are expected to buy their ticket before boarding the train.
If you do not buy your ticket before you travel, you could be issued with a Penalty Fare. The Penalty Fare is £100 reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days plus the cost of the appropriate single ticket for the journey being made.

Penalty Fare FAQs
Issued on/or after 23 January 2023
What is a Penalty Fare?
A Penalty Fare is an on-the-spot fare issued to anyone who does not have a valid ticket for their journey, when they have had the opportunity to purchase one.
The amount of the Penalty Fare is £100 reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days, plus the cost of the full single applicable fare for the journey, which means that anyone who does not have a valid ticket for their journey may be liable to pay a fine.
Are Penalty Fares in operation across all TPE routes?
Penalty Fares are in operation across all TransPennine Express routes except for journeys into and within Scotland as they have a different legal system. Also stations such as Habrough, Crowle and Ravensthorpe which don’t have ticket purchasing facilities.
If I am caught without a ticket do I have to pay the full Penalty Fare immediately?
No. You will have 21 days following the day of issue to make payment. We accept multiple methods of payment, the details of which can be found on the notice issued to you. Failure to pay within 21 days will result in the Penalty Fare increasing and may lead to legal action being taken to recover the funds.
What happens if the station has no ticket office or the ticket machine is broken?
You won’t be liable to a Penalty Fare and as above our Revenue Protection staff will be aware and will use their discretion.
What if I arrive late at the station?
You must buy a ticket before you board the train regardless of when the train departs. On most routes however, we operate a frequent service and there’s plenty of time to buy a ticket and board the next train.
There are many ways to purchase a ticket including through our website (transpenninetrain.com) or via our app.
Season tickets can be bought on-line using our smartcard and collected at stations.
What if there is a long queue at the ticket office?
Once again Revenue Protection staff will be well aware of any problems such as excessive queues and will use their discretion if its warranted. However, it is your responsibility to buy a ticket before you board one of our trains. As discussed in the previous answer, there are many ways to purchase a ticket before you travel.
