e-scooters are not permitted on our trains
Travelling by e-scooter
E-scooters are not permitted on our trains or within our stations. This is due to concerns over the fire safety threat that e-scooters and other lithium battery powered personal mobility transport devices can pose.
Similar devices, including hoverboards and e-skateboards are included in the ban.
We are committed to supporting customers who do not wish to drive to our stations but safety of our customers and staff must come first. Why have e-scooters been banned on trains?
Most UK train operators have chosen to ban e-scooters in response to concerns regarding the fire risk posed by lithium battery powered personal mobility transport devices. Severe overheating associated with faulty or unregulated lithium batteries increases the risk of the batteries catching fire.
The rail industry will review this ban in due course, following improvements in the regulation of e-scooter use and manufacture. What personal mobility transport devices are allowed onboard?
Non-electric scooters are permitted onboard, but petrol scooters and mopeds are banned. This is due to the safety risk of carrying fuel onboard trains.
Mobility scooters and aides are permitted onboard as long as they comply with our mobility scooter guidance.
Electric bikes are permitted as long as their space is booked in advance, and they are not charged onboard.Travelling by bike
If you're travelling by bike, you can leave it at one of the free-to-use bike sheds or book a space for it onboard. Find out more.
Can I travel with my mobility scooter?
Folded or dismantled mobility scooters can be taken on all our train services. You will need to apply for a scooter card in order to make sure your scooter meets the requirements to be taken onboard our trains. Find out more.
Why are e-bikes allowed?
The ban doesn't include e-bikes as they are deemed to be safer. This is because of the increased regulation around their production and use.
What if I can prove my e-scooter is safe?
We are unable to check the regulations and approvals met by each type of e-scooter and personal mobility transport device. As a result, a blanket ban has been put in place.
We will review this policy as we obtain more information from the industry. What happens if I bring my e-scooter anyway?
The National Rail Conditions of Travel states that train operators can refuse to carry items such as e-scooters.
If you arrive at one of our stations with an e-scooter and still need to travel, we will encourage you to return without your e-scooter and we'll work to get you on an alternative service.I want to...
